[labnetwork] XRD goniometer replacement

All,
  We have a Rigaku Smartlab XRD system that is 6 years old. We recently discovered that the "worm gear" on the goniometer is severely worn, which requires a complete replacement of the goniometer.  This system is not on service contract, which is part of our problem, but I wonder how unusual it is for such a major failure to occur after only 6 years of usage.  Has anyone else experienced such a failure in their XRD?
