Job Summary

Position: Senior Cleanroom Engineer
Location: UMass Amherst – Institute for Applied Life Sciences (IALS)
Schedule: 37.5 hrs/week; occasional nights/weekends
Salary: Level 30 - 31 (per PSU Salary Chart)
(Role Overview)
The Senior Cleanroom Engineer supports daily technical operations, equipment maintenance, and process development in Nanofabrication, Device Fabrication, Expanded cleanroom(FY27) and Roll-to-Roll (R2R) cleanrooms. This role ensures uptime of advanced tools, develops fabrication processes, and collaborates with faculty, students, and industry users to enable high-impact research.
(Key Responsibilities)
Operate and maintain cleanroom tools (evaporators, sputter systems, plasma etchers, ALD, wafer bonders, mask aligners, metrology tools, R2R lines).
Develop and maintain processes (etching, lithography, deposition, packages).
Implement preventive maintenance programs and troubleshoot equipment issues.
Coordinate vendor repairs and minimize downtime.
Train users and develop SOPs.
Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.
Recommend and supervise new equipment purchases and installations.
Respond to emergencies promptly.
(Minimum Qualifications)
Education/Experience:
Bachelor’s + 5 years, OR Associate + 8 years, OR HS diploma + 10 years in technical environment.
(Skills):
Cleanroom operations and tool maintenance (5+ years).
Experience with vacuum systems, gas distribution, pumps, and chillers.
Strong communication and IT skills for lab management systems.
EHS safety training and hazardous waste management.
Ability to lift 50 lbs and move machinery.
Preferred: M.S. in related field.
