Hello Bernhard-
Face and hand covering as are generally standard for all personnel within
microfabrication cleanrooms.
* Face coverings:
* Most, but not all, fabs require safety glasses be worn by all
personnel within a fab with the exception of those actively using
stereomicroscopes.
* Generally coverage of face from the nose down is built into
cleanroom hoods, which are commonly further augmented (within the hoods) by
surgical masks or beard-coverings for men with facial hair donned earlier in
the gowning process (prior to the hood).
* PPE (personal protective equipment) for chemical handing commonly
will add an additional PPE at the point of use, e.g., a chemical visor,
which covers the entire face from above the hairline to below the chin.
* Hand and arm coverings:
* Generally the hands are covered by nitrile or latex gloves for all
cleanroom personnel.
* PPE for chemical handling commonly will add (at the point of use)
wrist gauntlets as well as a second set of chemical gloves.
In addition to the chemical visors, gauntlets and gloves, chemical aprons
are also fairly standard PPE for chemical handling personnel. I have never
heard an argument for forgoing chemical PPE due to risk of trapping typical
fab chemicals. That said, the washing, drying, and storage of chemical PPE
after use often has additional safety procedures and controls.
I hope that was helpful.
Regards,
-Carrie

Dear all,
currently, we are in discussions with our occupational safety team and they
are having issues allowing us to use masks in the cleanroom, as we work with
chemicals and there is a concern that chemicals could be transferred from
the gloves to the mask and inhaled. Have you encountered similar problems?
Do you have any suggestions on how to address this issue? We would be happy
for any suggestion.
I asked my colleagues and they suggested using double gloving and disposing
of the contaminated gloves after contact with chemicals. What are your
opinions?
Best Wishes,
