We are open 24/7. All eqpt available.
Staff coverage is assured M-F 7am-5pm.
often available M-F until 7pm.
Select staff are on emergency call after hours.

Buddy system is required during all non staff hours.
Buddy system is lab wide, not tool specific.
i.e. Buddy system is at least two members anywhere in the lab.
Members are encouraged to "take a walk" when here after hours
and communicate with each other frequently.
Computer system warns the 3rd to last and 2nd to last at log out
and directs them to communicate with the person(s) they
are leaving behind. If a single person is logged in and enables
equipment, computer sends alert message to management.

Utility monitoring, toxic gas monitoring, low level VESDA are
fully
automated and on-duty 24/7. If any of those systems sense a
problem,
auto email, text messaging, and phone dialers communicate to
staff,
alarm company, campus facilities, PD and FD.
Notification level depends upon event.

Members can't get to gas vaults, bulk chemical storage etc.
Chases are open (eqpt pumps and local chillers) but lab wide
facilities (AWN, PCW, CDA, building chiller etc) are locked out.

I agree with John at Stanford.
The curious things happen and the slobs come out at night.
I occasionally visit after hours just to surprise (and suspend)
them.

Due to some headcount reductions we are re-thinking our
after-hours lab work. Previously we had trained “lab
attendants” who watched over things until midnight, then
required the “buddy system” after that. Now we are looking
at just using the buddy system
after 5:00 pm.

How do you handle things in your facility? Are you happy
